  • Every traveller knows that a truly perfect day in a new place is incomplete without one crucial element: the perfect meal. I’m not just talking about food to fill you up; I’m talking about an experience—a dinner that captures the essence of a location, a place that feels both excitingly new and comfortingly familiar. For days, I’d been on a quest for that meal. I’d eaten at beach shacks and roadside kottu stands, and while each had its charm, I was still searching for something more. And then, as the sun began to dip below the horizon, casting a warm, honeyed glow over the bay, I found it. Tucked away with an inviting aura was a place called The Hangout. From the moment I stepped inside, I had a feeling my search was finally over.

Its More Than Just a Bar & Restaurant

The first thing that struck me about The Hangout was the vibe. It wasn't just a restaurant; it was a space that felt curated for connection and relaxation. There was a gentle buzz of conversation, a mix of languages from travellers sharing stories, and a soundtrack that seemed to sync perfectly with the coastal breeze. The staff greeted me with a warmth that felt genuine, and I was immediately put at ease. It was clear that this was a place where you could linger, where the meal was not something to be rushed but an event to be savoured. Settling into my seat, I felt a sense of anticipation as I was handed the menu—a document that promised a journey of flavours.

A World of Choice: The Cocktail Conundrum

Before even thinking about food, my eyes were drawn to the extensive drink’s menu. It was clear that The Hangout takes its cocktails seriously, offering a delightful mix of classic and signature creations. As a lover of all things tropical, the Pina Colada, a classic blend of white rum, coconut milk, and pineapple juice, was calling my name. But then I saw the signature cocktails, and the decision became wonderfully difficult. The "Sunset at the Hangout" with blue curacao, sprite, and red wine sounded intriguing, as did the "Spicy Passion Fruit Margarita," which promised a kick of chili alongside tequila and passion juice.

Ultimately, I opted for the "Passion Fruit Mango Mojito," a vibrant concoction of white rum, mint leaves, passion fruit, mango juice, brown sugar, and sprite. It arrived looking like a tropical sunset in a glass, and it tasted even better. The sweetness of the mango was perfectly balanced by the tartness of the passion fruit and the refreshing hit of mint. It was the ideal drink to sip on as I perused the food menu, a perfect prelude to the culinary adventure that awaited.

    A Feast of Flavours

The food menu at The Hangout is a testament to culinary creativity, blending international comfort food with distinctively Sri Lankan touches. The variety is impressive, with everything from tacos and burgers to vibrant salads and sophisticated pasta dishes. Making a choice was the hardest part of my evening.

A Fusion of East and West

What truly caught my eye was the pasta selection, which seemed to perfectly encapsulate the restaurant's philosophy. While a classic "Creamy Garlic Prawns Pasta" sounded divine , I was drawn to something more unique: the "Hangout Ceylon Swirl Pasta". This dish was a revelation. It featured spaghetti tossed in a homemade spicy coconut curry sauce, beautifully paired with grilled mushrooms and fresh tomatoes. The curry sauce was rich and fragrant with a gentle heat that was quintessentially Sri Lankan, yet it worked in perfect harmony with the Italian pasta. Topped with a generous sprinkle of Parmesan cheese, it was a fusion masterpiece that paid homage to both its Sri Lankan home and its international influences. The menu also offered the option to add grilled chicken or prawns, but the vegetarian version was so hearty and flavorful that it stood proudly on its own.

Burgers, Bowls, and Everything in Between

My dining companion, a burger aficionado, had no hesitation in ordering the "Meaty Burger". They were given a choice between a beef or chicken smash pattie and it arrived as a towering, mouth-watering creation. The patty was juicy and perfectly cooked, topped with all the classic fixings: melted cheese, crisp lettuce, fresh tomato, and tangy pickled cucumber, all held together by a soft bun and served with a generous portion of french fries. For those with different dietary preferences, the menu was incredibly inclusive, offering a "Mushroom Burger" with battered fried mushrooms and a cheesy sauce, and even a "Ruby Royale Burger" with a red kidney bean patty and guacamole.

The Hangout also excels in crafting beautiful, healthy bowls. The "Hangout Sea Salt Bowl" sounded particularly tempting, with a base of soy rice topped with avocado, mango, local greens, and a choice of soy ginger fresh tuna or honey lime grilled prawns. This commitment to fresh, vibrant ingredients was evident across the entire menu, from the "Chicken Hawaiian Salad" with grilled chicken and pineapple to the "Prawns Avo Salad".

A Sweet Surrender: The Dessert Decision

Despite feeling satisfyingly full, the dessert menu was impossible to ignore. The offerings ranged from decadent chocolate treats to traditional Sri Lankan favourites. The "Choccy Mousse" and the "Chocolate Brownie," both served with ice cream and chocolate sauce, would have surely satisfied any chocolate lover's cravings. However, I wanted to try something that felt unique to the place.

The "Creme Brulee" was described as a rich custard base topped with a layer of crispy caramel, a timeless classic that is always hard to resist. But in the end, I opted for something truly local: the "Curd and Treacle". This simple yet profound dessert consists of fresh, creamy buffalo curd served with a drizzle of Kithul treacle, a sweet, smoky syrup made from the sap of the fishtail palm. It was the perfect end to the meal—cool, refreshing, and authentically Sri Lankan. It was a taste of the island's soul, a sweet and simple reminder of the beautiful place I was in.

As I took my last spoonful, I looked around The Hangout once more. The atmosphere was still buzzing, the cocktails were still flowing, and every table was filled with happy, satisfied diners. My quest was over. I had found more than just a great meal; I had found a place that understood what it means to be a traveller in search of connection, comfort, and a little bit of magic. If you find yourself in the beautiful bay of Hiriketiya, do yourself a favour: let your search for the perfect dinner end at The Hangout. I can promise you; you won’t be disappointed.
